A Granite Wilderness

Camp Amalinda, Matopos, Zimbabwe

Set in the distinctive Matobo Hills, the large granite boulders are the distinguishing feature of Camp Amalinda. All the rooms at the lodge are built into the rocks which adds a very ancient and organic quality. Because of these boulders each room has a completely unique size, shape, and layout – so each one feels special. The pool is very big and beautifully framed by the granite boulders, essentially a gorgeous rock pool, and a very cool respite in the heat of summer. The spa is right by the pool. History and dramatic natural beauty are the main drawcards to this lodge, the excursions to visit Cecil Rhodes’ grave and ancient San Rock art are particular highlights and it’s a great place for relaxing and taking in your surroundings. Wildlife isn’t as prolific as say, Hwange National Park but of course, the opportunity to track rhinos in the wild is unforgettable. Stargazing on the rocks behind the pool is excellent as well. The lodge is ideal for couples or small groups, but not ideal for anyone having difficulty with stairs or uneven ground. A relaxing escape for a few days of calm on a holiday and not necessarily of an adventurous safari, but it depends what you are looking for, and if you are looking for Rhinos and self-reflection it’s perfect!
