A Heartwarming Tale of Survival, Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Earlier this year, Kai was chosen for a groundbreaking translocation to Loisaba Conservancy. During the immobilisation process, a health scare arose, necessitating immediate resuscitation for pregnant Kai. Watch the heart-pounding moment dedicated rangers brought life back to Kai and her unborn calf below.
While Kai didn’t make it to Loisaba, in July 2024, the vigilant rhino monitoring ranger team, committed to sighting every rhino on Ol Pejeta every four days, was overjoyed to discover Kai, healthy and thriving, with a brand-new calf by her side. This news is especially heart warming, considering Kai’s previous loss. Her last calf, born in 2022, fell victim to a hyena attack, requiring urgent veterinary care and transfer to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for ongoing treatment.
But it looks like things are looking up for Kai and her miracle offspring, the rangers who watch over her, describe her calf as deeply bonded to its mother, with a sweet and inquisitive personality. When startled, the little one retreats but often returns to investigate, displaying a blend of curiosity and caution. Kai, ever the watchful mother, keeps a close eye on her calf’s every move.
Since birth, Kai’s calf has been sighted over 40 times by the rhino patrol team, a testament to its health and vitality. Rangers have formed a special bond with Kai and her calf, monitoring and protecting them. They are overjoyed to see Kai embark on this new chapter of motherhood.
