Kenya Welcomes Four Rare Mountain Bongos to Boost Conservation Efforts
Kenya has received four male mountain bongos as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the population of this rare forest antelope.
The animals arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before being safely transferred to Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, which now hosts over 100 bongos. Their arrival is expected to enhance genetic diversity and support ongoing breeding programmes.
Mountain bongos are Kenya’s largest forest antelope and are found in highland forests such as Mount Kenya, the Aberdares, Mau, and Eburu. They are one of the country’s most unique and valued wildlife species.
The new arrivals follow years of international collaboration with conservation zoos in Europe, supporting Kenya’s long-term recovery and rewilding efforts for the species.
This milestone highlights Kenya’s continued commitment to wildlife conservation and the protection of its rare and iconic species for future generations.
