Discover the Samburu Special Five
Samburu National Reserve is famous for a rare group of animals known as the Samburu Special Five — unique species mainly found in the semi-arid landscapes of Northern Kenya. Unlike the well-known Big Five, these animals are exclusive to this region, making Samburu a truly special safari destination.
The Samburu Special Five include:
- Grevy’s Zebra – The world’s rarest zebra, known for its narrow stripes and large ears.
- Reticulated Giraffe – Famous for its striking geometric coat pattern.
- Beisa Oryx – A desert antelope with long, straight horns and incredible survival skills in dry conditions.
- Gerenuk – Also called the “giraffe antelope,” known for standing on its hind legs to feed from trees.
- Somali Ostrich – Recognized by the male’s bright blue neck and legs and its impressive speed.
Samburu is also home to the traditional Big Five including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos, offering visitors a complete and unforgettable safari experience.
Beyond their beauty, several of the Samburu Special Five are endangered or near-threatened, making conservation efforts in Northern Kenya especially important. Visitors can spot these unique animals across Samburu’s open plains, acacia woodlands and along the Ewaso Ng’iro River.
