Why Nairobi Is Known as the Wildlife Capital of the World

Nairobi is widely known as the Wildlife Capital of the World because it is the only capital city with a national park located right next to its skyline. Just a few kilometres from the city centre, Nairobi National Park offers visitors a chance to see lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and many other wild animals in their natural habitat.

Established in 1946, the park is home to over 100 mammal species and more than 400 bird species. It is also an important conservation area, especially for black and white rhinos.

What makes Nairobi unique is the rare blend of wildlife, conservation and city life. Visitors can enjoy a morning game drive, visit the Giraffe Centre or David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and still explore Nairobi’s restaurants, markets and cultural attractions all in one day.
